they said
the coals would burn me alive -
skin peeling,
flesh screaming,
bones crumbling to ash.
 
they forgot
i have stood in hotter flames before.
 
this is not pain,
this is proof.
 
i do not flinch.
i do not run.
 
the heat curls around my ankles
like an old enemy
who learned to bow.
 
they watch,
waiting for collapse -
but still,
i remain.
 
because it is not
the fire beneath me
that decides if i fall.
 
it is the fire within me.
