WHAT THE FIRE KNOWS

the cross burns heavier than it looks,
old weight turning to smoke in my hands.
blood warms my cheeks like warpaint,
the taste of iron sharp on my tongue.
the voices crawl from the woods —
you are nothing without us
you will fall without us
but i have heard them before.
they are no prophecy.
just ghosts choking on their own dust.
the flames lick higher,
devouring every rule i was told to obey.
i watch it all burn
and feel nothing but the quiet thrill
of space being made.
when the fire dies,
the forest will not know me.
but i will.
